*Reusable* water bottles, bar soap, and a really great compost bin—just a few steps toward sustainability.
April gave us a lot to smile about—a little sunshine, a little nostalgia (hi, Saie Vintage drop). We partnered with Rocky’s for our dream matcha collaboration, released a new episode of The Saie Way (watch if you haven’t yet—here’s your nudge), and, of course, thought a lot about Earth Day.
So here we are—spring cleaning. Not just in closets or junk drawers; but more so in how we live. Our habits. Mindsets. Tiny swaps that feel doable and actually stick.
Like rethinking trash. We’ve been leaning into reuse in a big way lately. While recycling gets most of the attention, it's important to remember that "reduce" and "reuse" come first in the classic three R’s. Such a small percentage of what we put in the recycling bin actually gets recycled—and that’s why we’re so focused on those first two pillars.
Collectively, we agree: there’s really no reason to toss a perfectly good box or container when it can live another life. "I never use new packaging when needing to ship anything out—I dig around for used boxes or sleeves to ensure they have more than one life," says a freelancer on our product development team.
Some of us have whole systems at home—our director of marketing Andrea has a stash of clean takeout containers ready to be filled with leftovers and a cabinet full of glass jars—there’s always a future use. Our president Lucia returns dry cleaning hangers to the cleaners (yes, really)—it’s better for the environment… and you’re going back anyway. We think of it as a simple way to close the loop and support places that matter to us.
Our shower routines have gotten a refresh, too. We are officially bar soap devotees because frankly, they are greater than huge plastic bottles, not to mention so chic. Plus, when you think of shower gels, so much of what you’re buying is water, which adds to their overall carbon footprint. Three of our favorite bars:
(1) Soft Services Buffing Bar (the blue exfoliating one is incredible)
My Cluckin’ Soap Bars (they are wrapped in recyclable packaging—and don’t miss their Instagram)
Claus Porto (we like to gift their beautiful sets)
And while we love a long shower, we’re making an effort to keep it to five to seven minutes. (Our skin is thankful and less dry because of it.)
Our founder and CEO Laney has taken a close look at what’s in her kitchen. She’s a fan of HoldOn for compostable plastic bags “when we have to use one for storage and lunches.” When it comes to cling wrap, she will either skip it entirely in favor of these very cute (4) Hawkins New York linen reusable bowl covers (above) or use Compostic, if it’s a must. Even her paper towels and toilet paper have gotten an upgrade with Who Gives a Crap, made from recycled paper.
And setting up a compost system at home is essential. Laney recently switched to (3) Mill’s bin and is a fan. (Lomi is another nice option.)
Then there’s water bottles, which have become kind of a love language around here. No one shows up to HQ without one—and we are constantly refilling ours with Mountain Valley Spring Water (we keep the giant 5-gallon glass bottle stocked) to stay hydrated. For Colleen, our VP of product development, "No matter how short or far my trip is, my (2) Saie water bottle is with me." (She has a giant Stanley cup floating around the house, too.) It’s a habit that follows us on trips, walks, even coffee runs. And for those of us on the go? Sarah has a cool rec: "I recently purchased this Brita water bottle, which is amazing because it filters tap water for you."
Travel moments stick with us, too. Our pro makeup artist Shain has stayed at the (5) 1 Hotel West Hollywood, and he considers it one of his favorite U.S. hotels—not just because it’s stunning, but because of how deeply it’s rooted in sustainability. Everything—including design elements throughout made from fallen trees in California, and a 100% organic, sustainably grown vegetable garden—was crafted with intention. It makes you wonder: what if more places did it that way?
We'd say that’s what this month was about—remembering that there is a different way. Sometimes it’s as small as choosing to walk instead of hopping in an Uber (and not just because it's free). "It’s always worth the extra minutes—walking to and from work is a great way to get guaranteed fresh air during busy days," says Sarah.
Need a soundtrack for your commute? Patrick, our senior coordinator of global influence (and resident DJ), is sharing the latest office playlist—it’s a good one.
We don’t have it all figured out. No one does. But we do believe in noticing. In thoughtful shifts. In small swaps that make your trash even 15% less tragic. And while we’re all doing our part, it’s also important to remember that just 100 fossil fuel companies have been linked to over 70% of industrial emissions. The way to make real change is through who we vote for, what companies we support, and how we push for systemic accountability.
If you’ve been making swaps that feel refreshing—or trying ones that didn’t quite stick—we’d love to hear in the comments. Let’s trade notes.
Until next time,
Xoxo
