Last week was climate week, and New York City was buzzing with new announcements every day and what seemed like three events every night. We’ve been joking that it felt like the new Fashion Week, which our friend Sophia Li says is the whole point.
We just launched The Saie Climate Initiative, which is a first-of-its-kind commitment for a beauty brand to taking direct climate action by working towards net zero emissions, investing in women as climate leaders, and cleaning the world of plastic waste in partnership with rePurpose Global– the world’s leading plastic action platform. We’re so proud. Make sure to check thesaieclimateinitiative.com where we have our first-ever sustainability report which you can download.
We thought it would be cool to sit down with CEO and co-founder of rePurpose– and now Saie Climate Initiative board member– Svanika Balasubramanian to talk about the world-saving work she does, what The Saie Climate Initiative means to her, and what’s filling her with optimism for the future as of late. She’s personable, funny, and just brilliant.
Saie: What do you see the potential of the Saie Climate Initiative being?
Svanika: The potential of the Saie Climate Initiative is truly transformative! Saie is poised not only to set a new standard for sustainability in beauty but also to spark a ripple effect that inspires and mobilizes the entire industry. This initiative represents a powerful opportunity to turn responsibility into action, fostering a future where beauty doesn’t have to come at the cost of the planet or its people. I’m eager to see how this platform evolves and the collective change it can drive toward a more sustainable and responsible beauty sector.

Saie: Why is this important to you?
Svanika: This work is deeply personal to me because I’ve seen firsthand the devastating impact that our waste problem has on vulnerable communities across the globe. We don't think twice about what we put into our trash can - but across the global south, it's resulted in a humanitarian catastrophe. Climate change, the plastic crisis, environmental justice - these are all pressing, intersectional challenges that require large-scale collaboration; they are no longer issues that can be solved by governments or non-profits alone. It’s vital we find the right avenues for companies to play a role. The Saie Climate Initiative is a powerful step toward mobilizing the beauty industry to make choices that have positive, far-reaching consequences, creating much-needed impact.
Saie: What’s something related to your expertise and area of knowledge that is really inspiring you right now and bringing you hope/optimism for the future?
Svanika: Right now, I’m incredibly inspired by the growing momentum for a circular economy – the idea that products can be designed to be endlessly reused or recycled is a growing reality. Everyday, more and more brands are embracing it as a central part of their business models. Seeing companies commit to these principles and actively fund sustainable alternatives to fight plastic pollution gives me real hope that we’re moving toward a future where sustainability is the norm, not the exception.
Saie: What is one actionable thing people can do to help the planet right now that you wish everyone knew about?
Svanika: One powerful action people can take is to consciously choose products from companies that are genuinely committed to sustainability – but only when you truly need to buy something. The most sustainable choice is, of course, to avoid needless consumption. But by opting for brands - like Saie - that prioritize eco-friendly materials, ethical production, and transparency, you’re not just making a purchase - you’re voting with your dollars. You're voting for a more responsible and environmentally-conscious market. Every dollar you spend is a clear signal that sustainability matters and that consumers are demanding more from the brands they trust. Anyone can make this change, and if we do so as a collective, we will see more and more brands adopt sustainable practices.

Saie: What would be on your sustainability curriculum that everyone should read/watch/listen to?
WATCH: “Our Planet” – This Netflix series is just stunning! It’s not just about the incredible beauty and diversity of our planet but also the urgent need to protect it. It helps you feel a deep connection to nature and is a must-watch for understanding what’s at stake.
READ: “This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate” by Naomi Klein – A really compelling, thought-provoking book that challenges us to urgently rethink how our economic systems contribute to climate change.
READ: “Net Positive” by Paul Polman – This book provides convincing proof that companies can thrive while contributing to the well-being of people and the planet.
LISTEN: "Outrage + Optimism" – This podcast is perfect for anyone who feels a mix of frustration and hope about the state of the world. It’s thought-provoking and motivating, and I always come away feeling energized and ready to make a difference.
Saie: What’s one lifestyle swap that you’ve made with the climate in mind that was so easy?
Svanika: Last year I moved to NYC, which has been a whirlwind. With the abundance of takeout options now at every corner, it can be difficult to make healthy dietary choices. But one of the lifestyle swaps I’ve made with the climate in mind is making an effort to cook more at home, focusing on plant-based meals. It’s been surprisingly easy and rewarding! Not only does this reduce my carbon footprint, but it also cuts down on the single-use waste that comes with fast food and takeout. Even just swapping one meat-based meal a week for a plant-based option can make a huge difference.
Stay tuned for our next episode of The Saie Way– A Climate Docuseries, as Svanika may or may not be the star of it!
